Product Description
Hand-woven Mulberry Silk is a staple silk fabric from CALICO, made by spinning silk from cocoons farmed in Karnataka in villages in northern Bengal and woven on a loom.
It is gentle on the skin and has excellent moisturizing, heat retention, and breathability.
Natural silk has a different luster from that of machine-woven silk, and is characterized by an elegant, soft light yellow glow.
Since we first introduced it in 2013, it has been popular among designers and we have not been able to keep up with production, but we are finally able to introduce it in our online shop.
By using a single warp thread and two weft threads, the fabric is both flexible and strong.
The indigo dye is made using natural indigo, while the grey, black and beige yarns are dyed with azo-free dyes.
Handwoven Mulberry Silk is hand-spun in a village of North Bengal. For the warp, we use imported silk from China. For the weft, we use Malda silk, which cocoons are raised in Karnataka or other states and then woven on a machine.
It is very breathable and gentle on the skin, great in moisture and heat retention.
It is also fine and light with a subtle sheen on the surface, with an elegant pearl white shade. Even though it is a thin fabric, it consists of one warp and two wefts which add flexibility and strength to the fabric.
Compared to machine-woven silk available in the regular market, this silk is naturally pale yellow.
The finely woven light weight fabric is suitable for inner wear or scarf.
Great for clothing for any season. You can feel the silkiness and lightness of the fabric on skin.
It is one of Calico's standard silk fabrics, being popular among designers since 2013 as we introduced it.

* Hand-spun yarn is mainly produced by village women using a modern and highly efficient spinning wheel called an amvirtualka. If the yarn breaks, it will have knots as it has to be spun by hand.
* Most hand-woven and hand-spun fabrics are made in village huts, and depending on the environment, threads and grass may be mixed in. There may also be uneven areas, twists, smudges caused by skipped threads, and unavoidable stains. Please understand that these are characteristics of Indian fabrics before purchasing.
* Depending on the material, friction during use may cause shrinkage or pilling. Please avoid excessive friction or pressure as it may cause damage to the fabric.
