CALICO: the EXHIBITION vol.4
Khatris in transition
The changing world of Catri
The Khatri people of the Indian subcontinent have been engaged in dyeing for centuries.
In the dim light that pours into the room, the meticulous work is carried out silently, like reciting a scripture, while under the blazing sun, the rough washing and drying work is carried out, relying on the strength of the fabric.
By moving between extremes, a unique textile universe is eventually created that is part of the world, yet reflects the whole.
In Japan, many Indian fabrics have long been treated as "chintz," and have been perceived as still life objects without any knowledge of their background. How they are interpreted and used is left to the user, and the existence of the maker and the original purpose of the fabric are far removed from this.
We are now in an era where creators are coming to Japan like this, and I learned that there are various thoughts and backgrounds behind each and every piece of fabric.
On top of that, it may be an interesting time to develop our eye as users and create new relationships with fabrics.
CALICO has invited Sufiyan Ismail Khatri of Ajurac dyeing in 2019 and 2022, and Abduljabbar Khatri on September 13, the first day of the Bandhani (tied-dyeing) event in 2023, to hold exhibitions and workshops.
This year, in addition to the two men, we will be welcoming Sufiyan's father, Dr. Ismail Mohmed Khatri, and we hope to have a wonderful opportunity to exchange views on the history, present, and future of their dyeing work.
To commemorate the opening, on the first day of the event, September 13th, we will hold a talk event with three Mr. Catley and guest speaker Miwa Kanaya, a leading authority on Catley research.
In addition, workshops will be held at the "Factory Site" near Todaiji Temple's Tengaimon Gate on September 14th by Abduljabbar, a specialist in Bandani dyeing, and on September 15th by Sufiyan, a specialist in Ajurac dyeing.
Please see the image for recruitment requirements.
Since we are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, we will start accepting applications and responding to them from August 27th. Thank you for your understanding.
