CALICO & MAKU: A Journey through Weaving and Dyeing in East and West India at Outbound (Tokyo)

CALICO is coming to OUTBOUND Kichijoji...!

The special exhibition at OUTBOUND in Kichijoji will start soon. On the first day, the 28th, Kobayashi from Kiriko will be present.

Little by little, I am sharing the results of my new journey to Western India (Rajasthan and Gujarat) that began in 2023.
I have met many different craftsmen in various places, and although it is impossible to work with everyone, I have learned a lot thanks to this.
I don't place orders from the beginning (especially not with people whose eyes are rupee marks), but work with people whose expectations and the direction I want to go are the same as mine.
In particular, as industrial factories and workshops accumulate jobs, village jobs are being lost, jobs that are worth continuing.

I look forward to meeting you all and discussing all this and that.

"CALICO & MAKU: A Journey Through the Weaving and Dyeing Arts of East and West India"
Saturday, June 28th, 2025 - Monday, July 14th | 11:00-19:00 | Closed on Tuesdays, July 1st and 8th
Fumie Kobayashi will be present on June 28th

We will be holding an exhibition and sale at OUTBOUND featuring clothing and fabrics for daily life from CALICO: the ART of INDIAN VILLAGE FABRICS by Fumie Kobayashi, which is engaged in the continuous production of textile products suited to modern life based on respect for the traditional techniques and costumes that live on in various parts of India, as well as MAKU clothing items by Santanu Das.

This time, we have a wide range of items that men can also enjoy, including short-sleeved, open-collar summer shirts featuring impressive traditional woodblock-print patterns such as the Bharatpur print of Rajasthan and the Ajurack print of Kutch, as well as large shirts made from Kala cotton, a native cotton from northwest India.
Other items on offer include CALICO's classic Soni dress and Rajasthani dress, sarouel pants and long pants that can be worn by both men and women, cool tops such as sheer muslin short kurtas, and from MAKU, smooth crepe khadi dresses and lightweight jackets made from hand-woven linen, all perfect for a refreshing summer look.
We look forward to seeing you all.

*We apologize for only announcing this on social media and the web.
